BAKERY STYLE FLUFFY PIZZA ROLLS
My easy homemade pizza rolls are perfect for lunches, after school snacks, meal prep, and road trips. Soft fluffy dough rolled with pizza sauce, shredded cheese, pepperoni or ham, grated Parmesan, and Italian seasoning. This recipe is great for busy weeknights, freezer snacks, and make ahead lunches…or (no judgement) just to eat 3 at once.
INGREDIENTS
For the Dough
1½ cups warm water
¾ teaspoon salt
⅓ cup sugar
⅓ cup olive, avocado or canola oil
3⅔ cups flour
1¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
For the Filling
1 cup pizza sauce
1 1/2 cups grated mozzarella cheese (or more)
1/2 cup pepperoni slices or diced ham
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Grease a 9 x 13 baking pan or line with parchment paper.
DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl, stir together the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
Add salt and oil. Stir to combine.
Gradually mix in flour until a soft dough forms. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft but not sticky. Add a little more flour if needed.
Place dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Punch down dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle about ¼ inch thick.
Spread pizza sauce evenly over the dough.
Sprinkle with grated Parmesan and Italian seasoning.
Layer with pepperoni or ham, then evenly sprinkle mozzarella over top.
Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into 1½ to 2 inch strips. Roll each strip up tightly like a cinnamon roll.
Place rolls cut side up in the prepared pan, spacing slightly apart.
Cover loosely and let rise again for 20 to 30 minutes until puffy.
Bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 190 to 200°F in the center rolls.
Let cool slightly before serving.
Note: If you found your last batch doughy in the middle, bake on the lower rack and tent loosely with foil if the tops brown too quickly. Slightly smaller rolls also help them bake through evenly.
